As a drug and alcohol treatment center, we recognize that the life experience and recovery needs of each patient are different and unique, and yet, there are some core themes that seem to be universal. Gay men are impacted by a variety of personal, family, and social influences throughout their childhood and early adolescence which directly impact their adult beliefs and behavior. Every patient at Gay Men’s Institute will have the opportunity to explore these themes through discussion groups, written assignments, and personal reflection. Our staff will guide patients through our core curriculum during (2) two weekly sessions with their primary therapist. Each week of treatment will focus on a different theme:
Theme of Week #1 – Mindfulness & Resourcing
Theme of Week #2 – Emotion Regulation & Distress Tolerance
Theme of Week #3 – Healing Shame-Based Trauma
Theme of Week #4 – Cultivating Loving Relationships
Our philosophy at the Gay Men’s Institute is simple and direct – recovery, as well as any significant life change, is all about learning effective life skills and practicing those new behaviors until they become a natural part of your life.
There are many evidence-based therapies that have been proven to be highly effective in helping individuals recover from substance abuse and other addictive behaviors. All of these therapies share one principle in common: meaningful life change comes from mindful practice!
