What to Expect at Gay Men’s Institute
Gay Men’s Institute offers a complete continuum of care in our gender-specific residential and outpatient centers. Patients will reside at Gay Men’s Institute with around-the-clock guidance and supervision from our clinical and medical staff. Our Gay Men’s Institute Treatment Team works with each patient to determine the appropriate length of residential care, but most people stay for 30-40 days after successful completion of detox. Our recommended program consists of residential treatment at Gay Men’s Institute, followed by aftercare treatment at the Gay Men’s Institute Outpatient Services Center.
Throughout their stay, patients will have a full schedule of individual and group activities tailored to their personalized treatment plans. “Our Chosen-Family” Weekend Workshop
Once a month, families of patients are invited to Gay Men’s Institute for a two-day family workshop. Our staff will give a presentation about the disease of addiction and its effects on the brain, followed by an explanation by our clinical staff of our Gay Men’s Institute treatment approach. This allows families to understand what their loved-ones experienced when they were addicted, what they experience while being treated for the addiction, and how to help prepare them for a lifetime of recovery. On the second day of the weekend, patients join their families to participate in communication exercises together as a cohesive unit.
What Happens When I Leave Gay Men’s Institute?
Aftercare & Sober Living
Once patients have successfully completed their treatment, Gay Men’s Institute Discharge Planners work with them individually to discuss goals for life after treatment, otherwise known as an aftercare plan. Patients continue their care in a sober living community as they adjust themselves to lifetime recovery outside of Gay Men’s Institute. Our staff works with sober living communities both inside and outside Gay Men’s Institute’s network of partners based on the patient’s needs and his location preference. Patients in a sober living community are mostly independent but still have the option to receive care based on their needs. Most of our patients who go to sober living after leaving our facility stay for around nine months.
Gay Men’s Institute is dedicated to helping patients through their lifetime of recovery. We are proud to have a large, active alumni community organized by our staff. Gay Men’s Institute keeps alumni active and engaged through e-mail newsletters. Patients at Gay Men’s Institute are given the option to begin integrating into the alumni community during their fourth week of residential/inpatient treatment.
